Geita Gold Mining Ltd (GGML) is Tanzania’s leading gold producer with a single operation in Geita Region. The company is a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti, an international gold producer headquartered in South Africa, with operations in more than ten countries, in four continents. The mine is situated in the Lake Victoria Gold fields of North Western Tanzania, only about 85 km’s from Mwanza City and 20 km’s South East of the nearest point of Lake Victoria. The company has its head office in Geita, only 5 Km’s west of the fast-growing town of Geita, and also a supporting office in Dar es Salaam. Reporting to: Specialist 1 - Occupational Hygiene

Number of Positions: One (1)


Purpose of the Role

The role is responsible to execute, co-ordinate and monitor the application of Hygiene control systems and procedures according to occupational and legislative requirements.


Qualifications:

• Degree/Its equivalent/or Diploma in Environmental Science/Studies or any other related fields e.g.,

Public health, Food Science etc.

• Certificate in Mine Environmental Control- (Intermediate or advanced MEC-RSA), NOSHC, NEBOSH


Experience:

• Minimum of at least 5 years’ working experience as the Occupational/Industrial Hygienist or officer in the mining industries.

Main or Key Accountabilities:

• Determines appropriate monitoring and sampling strategies and prepare the yearly sampling plan.

• Assess the effectiveness of control technologies and recommend improvements to the workforce.

• Maintains, operates, and calibrates a variety of sampling and monitoring equipment.

• Evaluates and interprets monitoring and sampling results, makes determinations, and develops        corrective strategies.

• Prepares accurate and complete technical reports of survey findings and provides recommendations on how to correct hazardous conditions.

• Evaluate the long-term effect of exposure to health hazards in order to develop cost effective plans for addressing such situations

• Know the workplaces, processes, materials, sources of exposure, the people involved and the legal requirements which may apply

• Make certain operational changes and recommend strategies effective in minimizing exposure to health hazard

• Review operational procedures to identify processes which are detrimental to health.

• Analyze and interpret results of an assessment to develop plans for improved work conditions

• Accurately measure and sample levels of exposure, often through precise use of specialist equipment

 

Additional Requirements:

• Be in possession of a valid Tanzanian driving License.

• Computer literate/skills, experience with database and Microsoft office programs would be desirable.

• Knowledge of occupational health standards/ Occupational Exposure Limits, codes and regulations.

• Capable of determining hazards to be considered when conducting a health hazard identification for a workplace

• Knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques used in collecting and testing samples such as dusts, mists, fumes, vapors, noise, non-ionizing radiation, cold and heat stress and biological agents.

• Good verbal and written communication skills (English and Swahili)

• Capability to identify potential Occupational hygiene issues

About the Company

Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML or Geita mine), one of AngloGold Ashanti’s flagship mines, is located in North-Western Tanzania in the Lake Victoria goldfields in Geita region, about 120km from Mwanza City and 4km west of the township of Geita. It has been in operation as a large-scale mine since 2000 but mining has taken place in the area since the 1930s. The Geita gold deposit is currently mined as a multiple open-pit and underground operation.
